Staying at Downing Mountain Lodge

On the mountain, close to town, near the rivers, and within an hour of a multitude of trailheads, the Downing Mountain Lodge is a three-bedroom, two bathroom log chalet built in the round with sixteen sides.


With easy access to world-renowned outdoor activities in the Bitterroot Valley and located at the end of a private mountain road, the Lodge is as remote as you can get while still being close to town. We are located two thousand feet above the Bitterroot Valley on 140 acres of open forest land and wildflower fields, making the panoramic views from the Lodge a spectacular sight to see. The Lodge is only a twenty-minute drive to Hamilton, the Bitterroot Valley's largest town with plenty of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

Master Bedroom contains a queen bed and two twin beds, this room can accommodate up to four guests. This east facing room is perfect for catching the sunrise!

Bedroom #2 contains a double bed and can accommodate up to two guests.

Bedroom #3 contains a twin over full bunkbed and a twin over twin bunkbed. This room can accommodate up to five guests.

Loft contains a full bed, a full mattress, and 4 twin beds, accommodating up to 8 guests.

There is also a pullout queen couch in the living room.

Please note: Bedding is provided in the summer season. In the winter season, guests are asked to bring their own bedding or sleeping bags and towels. Top sheets, pillows, and pillowcases will be provided.

Commerical grade triple sink and sanitizer for easy cleanup no matter how many you're cooking for.

Available appliances include refrigerator, freezer, toaster, microwave, slow cookers, coffeemakers, blender, panini, etc.

The kitchen also contains ample space for prep work and a dining table for six. All tableware, silverware, and kitchen appliances are available for your use.

For private events, the kitchen can be made available to outside caterers to prepare a delicious feast!

Please note: While some spices and cooking oil may be available, guests are responsible for providing all food, oils, and spices. We recommend stocking up in Hamilton prior to arrival at the Lodge.

Two bathrooms are located in the communal space off the living room. There is a vanity entryway to the bathrooms with two sinks. Guest will have access to a shower, bathtub, and two toilets.

The central fireplace, woodstove and log rafters create a certain ambiance exclusive to mountain lodges. Three couches surround the fire as well as a dining table for 12, creating the perfect place to unwind.

The entertainment doesn't stop when the sun sets. A piano, guitar, foosball table, and boardgames are available to guests.

Relax after a long day of adventure in the wood stove sauna or six-person hot tub.

Grill your meals on either the large charcoal/wood fired BBQ or the propane grill. Plenty of seating for the group!

Behind the Lodge is a dirt road leading to a spring creek and the ridge. This is also where guests will find the trail to Downing Mountain and the high mountain tarns 2,000 feet above. A short hike to the south leads to an old two track roadway to Owings Creek Spring source. Wildflowers abound in May and June and July-September is huckleberry season!
