First Exclusive Look at Our Wood-Fired Finnish Sauna

One of the most exciting additions to Downing Mountain Lodge is our wood-fired Finnish sauna in Montana. From the very beginning, we wanted to create something far beyond an ordinary sauna. Instead, our goal was to design an unforgettable mountain experience. Guests can slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy spectacular views of the Bitterroot Valley. As a result, that vision inspired a custom-built, round Finnish sauna that blends traditional craftsmanship with the rugged beauty of western Montana.

A Custom Wood-Fired Finnish Sauna

Our handcrafted sauna comfortably seats up to eight guests. Unlike many modern saunas, a traditional wood-fired stove heats the space. It creates the soft, authentic warmth that has defined Finnish sauna culture for generations.

In addition, we carefully designed every detail, from the curved interior to the panoramic window overlooking the Bitterroot Valley. Whether guests visit after hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or exploring the mountains, the sauna offers a peaceful place to relax. They can recharge, reconnect, and soak in the mountain views. Most importantly, we wanted every visit to feel both restorative and memorable.

Built with Local Bitterroot Cottonwood

One feature makes this sauna especially meaningful. Currently, local craftsmen are building it by hand using locally milled cottonwood harvested along the banks of the Bitterroot River.

Because we value our local community, we chose regional materials. They celebrate the beauty of western Montana while supporting local craftsmanship. In turn, every board carries a story and reflects the landscape that surrounds Downing Mountain Lodge.

In addition, we recently cantilevered a beautiful western larch deck off the mountainside. From there, guests enjoy sweeping views across the Bitterroot Valley. Just steps away sits our handcrafted five-person cedar hot tub. It offers another peaceful place to unwind. Together, the sauna, hot tub, and expansive deck create an unforgettable mountain wellness experience.

When John and I first imagined this sauna, we knew we didn’t want to build just another amenity. We wanted to create a place where people could truly slow down. A place where laughter echoes through the trees, conversations linger a little longer, and the warmth of a wood-fired sauna encourages you to simply be present.

We chose local Bitterroot cottonwood because we wanted this sauna to reflect the landscape we call home. Every board, every curve, and every view tells part of the story of this mountain and the talented local craftsmen who helped bring our vision to life.
