March 18, 2025Stepping into the role of a Trip Leader can feel like a big responsibility, but here’s the secret—there’s no single “right” way to do it! Every Trip Leader brings their own style, and that’s what makes each backcountry ski and board trip to Montana’s Downing Mountain Lodge a unique and unforgettable Montana mountain experience. Whether you’re an experienced organizer or taking on this role for the first time, you’ve got this! And we’re here to help make the process smoother and more enjoyable.
Introducing the Trip Leader’s Guide
New this year, we’ve created a Trip Leader’s Guide to help you get started on the right track! This guide isn’t about rigid rules—it’s designed to provide helpful tips, structure, and inspiration to make planning easier and more enjoyable. Take what works for you, adapt what doesn’t, and most importantly—have fun with it! Leading a group trip should be as exciting as the adventure itself, and with the right approach, it can be a rewarding experience for both you and your group.
What Does a Trip Leader Do?
The first step in organizing a backcountry ski and snowboard group trip is having a Trip Leader. This key role involves:
- Coordinating all communications with Downing Mountain Lodge
- Securing your stay dates and making the deposit
- Managing logistics like arrival times, snowmobile shuttles, and optional guiding services
Beyond these essentials, Trip Leaders often delegate group logistics to make the experience more collaborative and enjoyable. This includes:
- Planning menus and purchasing food
- Organizing meal prep and dishwashing teams
- Assigning sleeping arrangements and ensuring everyone has what they need
By sharing responsibilities, you ensure a smooth, stress-free, and truly enjoyable experience for everyone involved. A well-organized trip means more time for fun, adventure, and relaxation!
