A Montana Backcountry Ski Lodge Unlike Any Other
September 18, 2026A backcountry ski trip does not have to be just for hardcore skiers. At Downing Mountain Lodge, we believe the best mountain adventures bring everyone together.
That includes skiers, snowboarders, kids, parents, and friends who would rather stay cozy by the fire.
As a family-friendly backcountry ski lodge in Montana, Downing Mountain Lodge gives your entire group a way to enjoy the mountains. Some guests spend all day making turns. Others soak in the hot tub, enjoy the sauna, play games, read by the fire or simply take in the views.
Everyone gets to be part of the experience.
A Backcountry Ski Lodge for the Whole Family
Planning a backcountry ski trip with children can be challenging. Often, the accommodations and daily schedule revolve entirely around skiing.
Downing Mountain Lodge offers something different.
Our large, welcoming lodge creates a comfortable home base for families and groups. Parents can head into the mountains while younger children stay warm and comfortable at the lodge with another adult.
Then, parents can switch.
One parent might ski in the morning while the other spends time with the kids. Later, they can trade places.
As a result, parents do not necessarily have to choose between a backcountry ski trip and a family vacation. Here, the two experiences can come together.
Comfortable Family Sleeping Areas
A good family ski trip starts with a comfortable place to sleep.
Downing Mountain Lodge has three private bedrooms and a large open sleeping loft. Several rooms work especially well for families because they include multiple beds.
The lodge also has indoor bathrooms with a bathtub and shower. That may sound like a small detail. However, parents traveling with younger children know how valuable a bathtub can be after a long winter day.
There is also plenty of room to spread out, relax, and settle into mountain life.
A Montana Ski Lodge for Non-Skiers, Too
Not everyone needs to ski or snowboard to enjoy a backcountry lodge vacation.
In fact, some of our groups love having a few non-skiers along.
While the ski crew heads into the mountains, other guests can enjoy a quiet day at the lodge. They might read beside the fire, practice yoga, work on a puzzle, cook, or simply enjoy the view across Montana’s Bitterroot Valley.
Some even become the unofficial après-ski crew.
Imagine coming back from a powder day to a warm lodge, a crackling fire, and food already underway. Better yet, the sauna is hot, and drinks are ready.
Suddenly, the non-skier becomes everyone’s favorite person.
Plenty to Do Without Putting on Skis
A mountain lodge should be enjoyable even when you are not outside.
That is why Downing Mountain Lodge has plenty to keep guests entertained between adventures.
You can challenge someone to Foosball, play darts, or pull out a board game or puzzle. Musical guests can pick up one of our instruments, including guitars and drums, or sit down at our tuned piano.
Prefer something quieter?
Find a comfortable spot with a book, stretch out, take a nap, or simply watch the weather move across the Bitterroot Valley.
There is no pressure to fill every minute.
Sometimes, doing very little is exactly what a mountain vacation should be about.
Yoga and Space to Slow Down
For guests who want movement without heading into the mountains, the lodge also has a collection of yoga and meditation equipment.
Yoga mats, bolsters, Zafu meditation chairs, and blankets are available for guest use.
Start the morning with a stretch before skiing. Gather the family for an informal yoga session. Or find a quiet corner for meditation while everyone else heads outside.
The lodge gives you room to move. It also permits you to slow down.
Come Back to a Hot Tub and Finnish Sauna
Of course, one of the best parts of a ski day is what happens afterward.
Our cedar hot tub offers a beautiful place to soak tired legs while looking out over the Bitterroot Valley. Nearby, our custom wood-fired Finnish sauna creates another way to warm up after a day in the snow.
Non-skiers can enjoy both amenities, too.
In fact, someone staying behind can fire up the sauna before the ski crew returns. By the time everyone comes off the mountain, après-ski is ready to begin.
That is a pretty good way to end a winter day.
Designed for Wet Boots and Snowy Gear
Family ski trips come with gear. Lots of it.
Boots, gloves, jackets, snow pants, and layers all need somewhere to go at the end of the day.
Our dedicated clothing and boot drying area helps keep winter gear organized and ready for the next adventure.
For families, this makes mornings much easier. Instead of hunting for damp gloves and cold boots, everyone can gear up and get outside.
Little conveniences make a big difference in the backcountry.
Easy Winter Access to the Lodge
Downing Mountain Lodge sits on a private mountain outside Hamilton, Montana, at approximately 5,500 feet.
During snowy winter conditions, guests begin at our winter parking area. From there, the lodge is approximately 1.5 miles away, with about 600 vertical feet of climbing.
Guests can ski to the lodge. We also offer snowmobile luggage shuttle services, which make transporting food, drinks and gear much easier.
When snow conditions allow us to plow the road, access may be easier.
Either way, arriving at the lodge feels like the beginning of an adventure.
Ski When You Want. Stay Back When You Don’t.
One of the biggest advantages of having a comfortable backcountry lodge as your home base is flexibility.
You do not have to keep the entire group on the same schedule.
Some guests might head out early for a full ski day. Another group might start later. Parents can trade childcare duties. Grandparents or non-skiers can stay at the lodge.
Then everyone comes back together.
That flexibility can make Downing Mountain Lodge especially appealing for families and groups with different interests and abilities.
More Than a Place to Sleep
Downing Mountain Lodge is not simply somewhere to sleep between ski days.
The lodge itself is part of the experience.
Cook meals together in the commercial kitchen. Gather around the fire. Play music. Challenge the kids to Foosball. Work on a puzzle. Stretch on a yoga mat. Soak in the hot tub. Heat the sauna.
Or pour yourself a cup of coffee and watch the mountains.
Meanwhile, the skiers and snowboarders can head directly into the backcountry.
A Different Kind of Family Ski Vacation in Montana
Traditional family ski vacations often center around a resort. There are lift tickets, parking lots, restaurants and crowds.
A stay at Downing Mountain Lodge offers a different rhythm.
Here, your family can experience the quiet of the Montana mountains while still enjoying the comforts of a full-service lodge.
Most importantly, everyone can participate in their own way.
The skier can chase powder. The kids can play games. The non-skier can read by the fire. Someone can get dinner started. Someone else can fire up the sauna.
Later, everyone gathers around the same table and shares the stories of the day.
That is what makes a family-friendly backcountry ski lodge special.
You do not all have to do the same thing to have an adventure together.
